Virginiavej Kindergarden

2011 - 2013

Day care in a homely setting

Popular with families, the city of Frederiksberg has the youngest population in the country. Vandkunsten won the competition to build a contemporary day care center that fit into the villa-packed neighborhood at Virginiavej.

We designed the day care institution as two two-storey villas to fit in. At the same time the building is quiet building and rich in architectural variety. The easily recognizable building volume has an assymetric roof, large chimneys for the ventilation systems, as well as  great variations in the sizes and location of windows

A visual experience

Many visual connections between spaces in the building inspire to move around. Furthermore the variation in the design as well as daylight of the interior spaces supports a great number of activities for the kids. All space for kids units as well as common spaces are directly linked to an exterior space, the garden, a balcony or a roof terrace.

Compact quality spaces for playing

Exterior spaces are divided between a front yard area and two play areas North and South of the nap space.

The kindergarden is built to comply with the 2020 energy standards, the most ambitious possible.
