Transformation of historic hospital buildings

Sønderhus and Østerhus

The buildings Sønderhus and Østerhus at Sankt Hans have previously served as a living environment for psychiatric patients. The site’s deep and unique history means that we cannot regard the transformation of the buildings as an ordinary renovation task. Creative activities such as drawing and painting were a prominent part of the treatment approach throughout the 20th century. Our transformation strategy aims to incorporate a sensitive and creative touch that discreetly references the history.

Østerhus and Sønderhus

Both Østerhus and Sønderhus are inspired by Bindesbøll’s Kurhus at Sankt Hans Hospital, built in 1860. Østerhus (marked in blue) was built in 1872, designed by architect N. S. Nebelong, as part of the hospital expansions that took place in the early 1870s. The building is constructed with three stories and exposed brick in yellow bricks. Sønderhus (marked in red) was built in 1907, designed by architect H. Meyer, and was originally reserved for female patients. Sønderhus is built with three stories and exposed brick in yellow bricks.

Østerhus - parterre

The common room in Østerhus is furnished with a residents’ café, a shared kitchen, and long tables.
Here, the doorway is widened to correspond to the window openings on the floors above, and the panel door is replaced with a double-leaf patio door. The terrain is being adjusted to improve accessibility.

Sønderhus - parterre etage

In Sønderhus, there are already examples of how the facade has been worked on and adapted to the house’s use over time, and now another chapter is being added to the story. By working on the facade, we have strengthened the relationship between the residents and the surrounding park landscape.

The ground floor is furnished with communal spaces such as a shared laundry, hobby room, and with the opportunity for future residents to occupy and arrange for themselves. Through the combined communal rooms, the ground floor can be accessed directly from the surrounding open areas.

The terrain is worked locally and is defined by ‘residential towers’ in both extent and depth. At the existing window openings, the parapet/base is removed to enable direct access from common rooms to open spaces.
