An embracing courtyard

With a program like this, our usual approach must be turned upside down, because we are forced to see our typical methods with new eyes. Whereas we typically aim to create the physical framework for a housing development, with the new crisis center on Bornholm we have focused on informal everyday encounters. We have strived to make space for good neighborhood life. Here, meeting in the stairwell, the courtyard, or by the bicycle rack will be the focal point of the architecture we wish to create.

It’s about creating a safe environment around a daily life that is fragile and new. There will be a need for manageable, predictable frameworks. There is no room for surprises here.

By drawing inspiration from a traditional four-winged farm from Bornholm, we have sought to create a building that embraces a safe courtyard – where you can safely let the children play while cooking, doing laundry, or just sitting.

The proposal also includes an ambition to keep the construction solutions at such a simple level that we, to the greatest extent possible, ensure funds for materials, spatial qualities, and the best possible daylight conditions in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

We set the framework for a safe and high-quality everyday life during a difficult transition period, as well as a good and secure working environment for staff and volunteers.

Courtyard
The program’s three main functions are placed on the site in a single story, creating a safe and enclosed outdoor space. A tool and bicycle shed forms the fourth wing. The approach is pragmatic and robust.

Daylight
No building volumes have been designed with a depth greater than 12 m.
By consciously working with the roof geometry, we have the opportunity to achieve a great effect in terms of daylight and covered outdoor areas with relatively small means, where desired.

Modularity
All three wings are delivered as modules.
This ensures quick and efficient on-site assembly as well as early cost certainty. It means a maximum height of 4.1 m for the entire module.

We have sized the building structures reasonably in relation to constructing them as room-sized box modules. It is therefore assumed that the structure will be made of wood. This means that we have made a crucial choice regarding sustainability from the outset.

The facades are clad with red-painted wood under large roof overhangs, which provides good structural wood protection. The wood cladding is executed as a mix of horizontal overlapping boards under the windows and vertical ‘1 on 2’ cladding above. Windows are made of wood/aluminum, with clear lacquer on the inside and raw aluminum on the outside, with continuous sections in a dark green.

The built-in wooden shelves provide opportunities for both storage and seating niches with views of the courtyard, both at the edge of the residence and in the dining area.

Interior reveals, window frames, and patio doors are made of wood, which gives the room warmth and texture.

All of the house’s functions are connected by a hallway, which alternates between the facade and the center of the building. The hallway ensures that no functions become passage rooms.
